Using Scandisk : Assignment 1

About Scandisk

Scandisk is a utility that comes with Microsoft windows 95 and later

It is designed to fix errors in the structure of the filesystem and find and try to recover data on bad blocks of the hard disk

You should run scandisk everytime the computer crashes.

Step One : start scandisk

Click on the Start Button

Navigate the Start menu as Shown

Through Programs, Accessories and into System Tools

Select Scandisk

Start Scandisk

Step Two : choose scan type and drive to scan

When Scandisk runs it displays this dialog box

From here you select the hard disk drive you want to scan.

And the type of scan

There are two scan types

Thorough

Which checks for bad blocks on the drive

Standard

Which doesn't check for bad blocks

Normally you would choose standard, thorough takes a lot longer and need only be used once in a while or if you know there is something wrong with the drive.

Step Three : Scan the drive

When you have chosen what you want to scan click on scandisks Start button

If you wish to cancel Scandisk click on the close button

As Scandisk runs the progress bar will move from the left to the right

If you wish to quit scandisk during a scan press the cancel button

Sometimes Scandisk seems to take a long time to run, you can see if scandisk is still running by looking at the spinning disk icon

When Scandisk finishes checking the drives selected it will display another dialog like this which gives a summary of what was found
