It is designed to fix errors in the structure of the filesystem and find and try to recover data on bad blocks of the hard disk
You should run scandisk everytime the computer crashes.
Click on the Start Button
Navigate the Start menu as ShownThrough Programs, Accessories and into System Tools
Select Scandisk
From here you select the hard disk drive you want to scan.
And the type of scan
There are two scan types
Normally you would choose standard, thorough takes a lot longer and need only be used once in a while or if you know there is something wrong with the drive.
If you wish to cancel Scandisk click on the close button
As Scandisk runs the progress bar will move from the left to the right
If you wish to quit scandisk during a scan press the cancel button
Sometimes Scandisk seems to take a long time to run, you can see if scandisk is still running by looking at the spinning disk icon
When Scandisk finishes checking the drives selected it will display another dialog like this which gives a summary of what was found
